MONTGOMERY, Sir Bernard Law, Viscount (1887-1976). Field Marshal.
Autograph Letter Signed ('Monty') to [Sir Edward] Crowe, 2 pages 8vo, Headquarters, British Army of the Rhine, 20 April 1946. An interesting letter discussing the various medals conferred upon Montgomery by the Russians.
'... I think I am the only Englishman to receive the Order of Victory. It has 91 diamonds and 5 slabs of ruby, and is worth £6000 (so I am told). I will show it to you one day. ...'
It was on a holiday in Switzerland in 1927 that Montgomery met Sir Edward Crowe, whom he described as 'one of my most valued friends, though considerably older than I am' (see Montgomery's Memoirs, Odhams Press, page 37).
