WELLINGTON, Arthur Wellesley, duke of (1769-1852). Autograph Letter Signed ('Wellington') to Lord Monteagle, 1 page 8vo with integral endorsed leaf (a little soiled, small splits professionally repaired, London 18 January 1843. Telling him that Wellington had ordered and received 'the Pamphlet to which you refer'. Thomas Spring Rice, first Baron Monteagle of Brandon (1790-1866, politician) had beecome a rather ineffective chancellor of the exchequer in 1835, but resigned the office in 1839. The letter is, neverhteless, addressed to him at 'Exchequer Chambers'. The endorsement (in Monteagle's hand) reads 'D of Wellington ' 14 Jny 1843 'Sale of Ld Wellesleys books.' Richard, Marquess Wellesley (1760-1842), at one time governor-general of Bengal, Wellington's eldest brother, had died on 26 September the previous year at the age of eighty-three. [No: 25606]
