PROCTER, Bryan Waller (1787-1874). Poet and lawyer. 'Barry Cornwall'.
Autograph Letter Signed to the editor of Friendship's Offering [W.H. Harrison], 1 page 8vo, 56 Chancery Lane, 7 May 1835, with Harrison's reply on the verso. Asking what would be the latest time by which he could make a contribution.

'... Be good enough to address me, if you please, in your own name ('person' deleted) - as you will feel with me, I dare say, that it is unpleasant to communicate with an anonymous correspondent. Mr Inglis did write to me, but I was at that time suffering under much domestic distress. ...'

Harrison explains that the magazine must go to press in late May or early June in order to be ready for the Indian market, and grovels under 'a name so humble as is mine in the world of literature'.

Friendship's Offering, an annual, first appeared in 1828 and hosted many distinguished contributors including Tennyson, Coleridge, Ruskin (26 items) and Macaulay. Procter himself contributed 20 items and Harrison, despite his literary misgivings, no fewer than 42.
