NICHOLAS I (1796-1855). Emperor of Russia. Autograph Letter Signed in French to General Alexander von Benckendorff, 3 pages 4to with envelope (in Cyrillic), Peterhof, 3 July 1837. Small tear professionally repaired but in fine condition. Thanking an old friend for his good wishes on the emperor's 20th wedding anniversary, commenting on the weather and on telegraphic experiments, and describing the celebrations. With a transcript and translation. 'Dear friend, I write to thank you on my behalf and that of my wife for your good wishes on our 20th wedding anniversary. May God ensure that our domestic happiness lasts as long as possible! I am delighted to hear the news of your state of health, and I pray that nothing will disturb your convalescence; on which subject I am not very pleased with our telegraphic experiments, with the big [?] As you know, the weather on 1 July was atrocious, and we had to postpone the illumination until yesterday. On the first day we simply had the parade, and then the masked ball in the evening, where there were crowds of people and [?] figures. Yesterday morning we were rewarded with magnificent weather. We had the cadets' parade first, then the walk to Alexandria, then the ball and illumination, the garden was full of people. Almost like old times and everything passed off without the slightest hitch. I am now allowing myself a week's holiday to inspect the fleet and look after the cadets.
