LUTYENS, Sir Edwin (1869-1944). Architect. Autograph Letter Signed to the portrait painter [Sir Gerald] Kelly (1879-1972), 2 pages 4to, as from 7 Apple Tree Yard, York Street, St James's, 21 February 1923. Complaining of the Delhi committee's placement of the portrait at the viceroy's palace. 'Like all committees the Delhi committee played an asses part and decided that the 1st Viceroy hung in the dining room should be the first viceroy that occupies the house! This means Reading 3½ next man 5 & the next 5 which will be the man in 13½ years. So God made England! ...'New Delhi, known as 'Lutyen's Delhi' was largely designed by him, with the Viceregal Lodge, now Rashtrapati Bhavan, considered his crowning achievement.
