SOUTHEY, Robert (1774-1843). Poet.
Autograph Letter Signed to Charles Bowles Fripp, 2 pages 8vo, Keswick, 9 June 1834, together with the autograph manuscript (unsigned) of an memorial inscription, 1 page 8vo. The letter to Fripp is identified as such in another hand at the foot of the second page and bears on the second leaf two quoataions, the memorial inscription is also identified and dated in ink by another.
As Southey's letter makes clear, he is not entirely satisfied with his memorial, which is for the tomb of Joseph Butler (1692-1752), Bishop of Bristol and later of Durham, in Bristol Cathedral.

'I have delayed the inclosed inscription longer than was fitting, & yet not long enough to have have satisfied myself with it: but as I can produce nothing more satisfactory within the limits to which the monument confines me, I send it such as it is, requesting that any alterations may be made in it which may be thought proper, or that it may be rejected altogether, without scruple ...'
 'The passage from Origen should (in my opinion) be given in the Bishop's translation: that will be intelligible to everybody, & the reference will direct those, who wish to seek it, to the original passage. ...'

Joseph Butler is best known for his Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Constitution and Course of Nature (1736).
