SCHWEITZER, Albert (1875-1965). French philosopher, physician and musician. Autograph Letter Signed in French to Mrs D Cooke, 1 page 4to on flimsy paper, Lambarene, 21 May 1957. With a separate letter from a Dutch nurse appending a translation of the original into English. Schweitzer's letter conveys his thanks to Mrs Cooke's sister for a gift to the hospital, and adds a little historical detail: '... Her gift is very precious in these difficult times. Four doctors and 10 nurses from Europe are working in my hospital. My hospital has been founded in 1913 by my wife and myself. It is situated in a region with vast equatorial forest, where the population is very poor and still primitive. ...' [from the translation] [No: 21103]
